Can You Dye A Synthetic Wig?
The answer is yes, but the dyeing process of synthetic wigs is more challenging than human hair wigs. And you can’t dye a synthetic wig with regular hair dye because synthetic hair isn't as permeable as human hair, and the chemicals in the dye can damage synthetic hair fibers. So the fabric dyes that are specifically made for polyester and synthetic materials are better.
The Challenge Of Dyeing A Synthetic Wig?
Because synthetic materials, created from processed fibers such as polyester, acrylic, and polyvinyl, don’t have the natural pigments that real human hair does, regular hair dyes will not work on synthetic wigs. If you are going to dye your synthetic wig, we recommend fabric dyes specifically made for polyester and synthetic materials.
Plus, it is impossible to dye a synthetic wig into lighter color. They cannot be bleached. Therefore, you have to choose a darker color than your wig. Generally, white wigs, silver wigs, and pastel wigs are usually the easiest to dye.
What Synthetic Wigs Are Apt For Dyeing?
The color of the wig: You are probably wondering how to dye a synthetic wig a lighter color. Because the hair of the synthetic wig lacks toughness, the bearing capacity is also worse. Therefore, the color of synthetic wigs cannot be faded. In other words, light-colored wigs are easier to dye, while darker wigs cannot be bleached to a lighter color. For example, if you want to dye a synthetic wig dark brown, don’t choose a black one, a lighter wig is better. Therefore, using a pastel-colored wig or a white wig is ideal for coloring.
A new or used wig: We strongly advise you to choose a cheaper and used wig. Because your synthetic wigs may sometimes get ruined in the process. Also, expensive wigs are smoother in texture that cannot accommodate the colors, not only are they difficult to color, but they are also easy to fade. Besides, a discarded synthetic wig is more suitable for dyeing. Such wigs are not too much of a loss, even if they do not turn out as expected, which will minimize your losses.
